ABOUT WESTBROOK INN

The rich history behind The Westbrook Inn Bed & Breakfast

THE WESTBROOK STORY

Westbrook Inn Bed and Breakfast™ was built in 1876 by a local sea captain as a gift to his adopted daughter Ida Post.  After her death in the 1950’s, the home became a family home, a boarding house, The Wheaton House Inn,and finally The Westbrook Inn Bed & Breakfast in the 1990’s.   Its many rooms were used to house local travelers and seamen and shoreline vacationers who passed through Westbrook, Connecticut. The inn's perfect location, in the Connecticut River Valley and along the shoreline has created an ideal intimate getaway from the beginning of its time. Today, this beautifully restored, four-season inn has 10 charming rooms to accommodate our guests.

Another Inn with a storied past recently became part of the Westbrook Inn family.  Formerly the Captain Stannard House Country Inn, the 11 room stately mansion located just steps away is now part of our story.  Newly reimaged and now called The Stannard, it’s fresh, quirky Coastal Farmhouse vibe celebrates the rich history which makes this property special.

When you enter with Inn, you feel the warmth of generations of love and welcome. Thoughtfully decorated, they balanced a mix of vintage charm, and casual elegance. We encourage you to make yourself at home and enjoy the comfortable surroundings.

Each stay includes a complimentary homemade breakfast, modern amenities, private bathrooms, access to beautiful gardens, board games, feature fireplaces, and so much more. Enjoy a cup of coffee or tea amidst your beautiful surroundings and be spoiled with the art of hospitality provided by the Westbrook Inn Bed and Breakfast team.

Walking distance to West Beach and riverfront access to the Patchogue River makes Westbrook Inn Bed & Breakfast a perfect location for your Connecticut getaway. The Stannard offers an expansive covered porch complete with rocking chairs to enjoy a leisurely afternoon.  The bed and breakfasts are perfect for couples getaways, girlfriends getaways, friends and family getaways, corporate retreats and specialize in elopements and intimate weddings.

YOUR INNKEEPERS - OUR STORY

Meri & Marcus

In 2019, Meri & Marcus bought The Westbrook Inn. Owning a Bed and Breakfast had always been her dream . . . one Marcus had never considered. After a successful 30-year career in Corporate sales, Meri decided to make that dream a reality. They discussed taking on the challenge when they retired, but in 2018, they attended an Aspiring Innkeeper seminar, and It was an eye-opening experience. Innkeeping has changed with our digital age and competition from online travel services like Expedia and Booking.com.

Though their search took them as far away as Amelia Island, Florida, they decided to stay close to family and friends and settle in coastal Connecticut. A stereotypical Victorian Inn was not the plan, and they preferred something that was fresher and nautical. However, walking through the doors of the Westbrook Inn, they knew it was perfect. Meri recalls, "There was a happy energy to the home that kept bringing us back. There must have been much love and happy times had by people in this building." The Inn had great bones but needed a refresh. They sorted through doilies and dried flowers and replaced carpets, furniture, and wallpaper. "Our approach is focused on creating a warm and inviting customer experience. We want to change the view of B&Bs from dusty, knick-knack-filled old homes to a fresher vintage experience focused on today's active travelers". Besides creating comfortable, inviting rooms providing activities like kayaking and biking, they enjoy helping to introduce guests to the endless activities on the beautiful Connecticut Shoreline.

In 2024, Meri’s original vision became a reality.  The beautiful, majestic Captain Stannard Country Inn became part of the Westbrook Inn Family.  This gorgeous 1872 Mansion with a stunning cupola and quirky interior is now the airy, coastal Inn of their dreams.  Once again, some reimaging is required, but will continue to operate as they put their personal touches on the property.  Newly renamed, The Stannard will be a fun project for guests who enjoy being along for the journey.

As demonstrated in their continued investment in the community, these entrepreneurs give back to the community and industry. Meri is the President of the Connecticut Lodging Association and Chair of the local Chamber of Commerce. She represents Westbrook on the Tourism Council and serves on local committees, including the Christmas Tree Lighting Committee. She drags Marcus along with her on all her whims.  An avid boater, Marcus recently became a Captain himself, and they hope to add sunset cruises to their amenity list next year. He continues to keep his day job commuting to New York City daily, though you will generally find him mingling with guests at breakfast on weekends or with his tool belt taking care of all maintenance needs.

MERI WICK - OWNER

Owning a Bed and Breakfast has been my lifelong dream. After a successful 30 year career in Corporate sales, I decided to make that dream a reality. Together with my Life Partner, Marcus and our family, we took over the Westbrook Inn in early 2019. Our approach is focused on creating a warm and inviting customer experience. We want to change the view of B&B's from dusty, knick-knack filled old homes, to a fresher vintage experience focused on today's active travelers. We love creating comfortable, inviting rooms, providing activities like kayaking, and helping to introduce guests to the endless activities on the beautiful Connecticut Shoreline.
